Description

The book refers to public art and its expansion in relation to the public sphere, as a result of the expansion of artistic media and methods. The term "public art" emerged in the 1960s and was initially associated with public space and government funding, in Greece it was not exclusively identified with public/outdoor sculpture for a long time. "New public art" broadens the field of artistic activities encompassed by the term, including community art, participatory/relational art, net art, etc., while maintaining its connection to the concepts of public, social, and political, and downgrading its spatial determination. The above are presented through case studies, starting from the sculpture of the pedestal, and continuing with works produced in the subsequent relational, performative, and archival turn. As the literature on contemporary art mainly comes from the international scene, ignoring the Greek scene, the reference to domestic examples and identified peculiarities was considered important for this volume. Thus, art in the urban landscape is examined as memory, history, and image through the analysis of examples from the cities of Athens and Thessaloniki (Haris Kanellopoulou, Panagiotis Bikas, Thanasis Moutsopoulos). Basic concepts such as public and private, place and space, as well as their representation, are studied (Kostas Vasileiou, Dimitra Chatzisavva, Efrosyni Tsakiri). Expanded technologically spatial and performative practices, walking performances, gendered spatialities, and memory interactions in the public sphere are discussed (Vasilis Psarras, Maria Konomi, Panos Kouros). Finally, Eva Fotiadis, Elpida Karaba, and Kostas Daflos focus on the field of new public art and the (digital) public sphere. • Angeliki Avgitidou is an Associate Professor in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Western Macedonia.
