Description

Although emanating from the soul, the melancholic condition inherently involves a relationship with space. The aspects, structures, functions, and relationships of its parts evoke a latent architectural language deeply rooted in human psychology throughout the ages. The art of melancholic space seems to emerge through subjective references, through commonplaces between words and points in time. These melancholic "poems," being allegorical, symbolic, and conceptual constructions, do not concern the strict spatiality of the physical and the mathematical, but rather a kind of anthropological landscape, a landscape both incomprehensible and immeasurable.

In the same way that Gaston Bachelard describes how "lived space transcends the geometric," this book attempts to go beyond the reading of space, translating the inner experience of melancholy into spatial conditions, qualities, and characteristics. The localized anatomy of melancholy is accompanied by an architectural reading of symptomatic descriptions of the phenomenon, as revealed in excerpts from melancholic discourse - images, poetic metaphors, symbolism, philosophical analogies, and theoretical frameworks - from the past to the present. In this way, an anthology of metaphorical patterns is formed, condensing the spatial "poetry" of the melancholic atmosphere and its relationship with the body, the structure, the landscape, and the city.
