Description

The increase in women's participation in the public sphere, especially in the field of work, has been a characteristic of the last decades of the 20th century. However, despite the numerical increase in women's participation in economic activity, there are still significant differences in quantitative data between different countries and a gap in employment between men and women. These changes have contributed to the dissemination of new perceptions of gender equality, the promotion of equal opportunities, and the improvement of women's position in economic and professional life, but at the same time, new obstacles and divisive lines have been created.

The academic engagement with Gender, from various scientific fields, is now significant and multifaceted. There are also numerous political texts, informative brochures, journalistic articles, and texts of broader interest on the subject.

This edition has two main objectives: the first objective is to inform and stimulate students, in order to make them aware of a different perspective and approach to issues related to their field of study.

The content of the book is structured as follows: The first chapter includes an article entrusted to the well-known Gender researcher Catherine Hakim. The main reason for this choice is the presentation of views that have often provoked sharp criticism from a significant part of the scientific community, especially feminist researchers in the UK, regarding the criticism that Hakim exercises on dominant feminist theories (which she calls feminist myths). This way, the reader has the opportunity to be informed through a different approach to the subject, regardless of whether they agree or disagree.

The second chapter includes theoretical reflections and questions about gender relations in the labor market in the European Union. The third chapter critically analyzes the main sociological and feminist theories, and the fourth chapter presents a brief overview of the main theoretical explanations of women's participation in employment from the field of economics. The fifth chapter refers to gender studies at universities, and then the sixth chapter includes national and European legislation on gender issues. In the seventh chapter, characteristics of gender participation in employment are presented, and in the eighth chapter, the state of gender equality is presented according to the reports of the European Commission and the EIGE.

The next chapters, 9 and 10, refer to research findings conducted by the author on gender issues. Thus, the ninth chapter deals with the evolution of female employment in Greece and the position of women in businesses, presenting the results of research on women's entrepreneurship, and the tenth chapter focuses on women employees in banks. The eleventh chapter refers to research on the perceptions of students regarding gender equality in the workplace. Chapters 12 and 13 present a qualitative analysis of television and online advertisements related to gender equality. The next chapter, the fourteenth, refers to the functioning of support centers for women workers in the Armed Forces.

As a good practice and in accordance with chapter 15 of the policy measures for domestic violence. Finally, the main policies of the EU for gender equality in the workplace are presented in the conclusion.
