Description

The Pontic dialect is rich in proverbs, sayings, wishes, curses, and expressions that give a special liveliness and beauty to our language.
When in 1992 I took over the editing of the magazine "Pontiako Vima" of the Efxinos Leschi Kozanis, my main goal was to enrich the magazine, in addition to the Historical and Folklore texts related to Pontus, with more texts of the dialect: authentic prose characteristics of the particular regions of Pontus, poetic language, songs, unpublished works, proverbs, sayings, etc.
During that period, with my editing, two editions of written texts by Stathis Christoforidis-Sarpglis were published, titled "Mavra kairous kai mavra imeras" (Black times and black days), the first with the subtitle "Amirant-Arapanti" in 1986 and the second with the subtitle "O Yagon" in 1989, and the third edition with the subtitle "Kounaka i genetira" (Kounaka, the birthplace) was being prepared and was released in 1993.
The richness of characteristic expressions, proverbs, sayings, etc. in these editions prompted me to collect and record them and to search for a similar richness in other Pontic publications.

Publications from which expressions, proverbs, etc. were drawn and recorded are: 1) Georgiou Zerzelidis a) "To Kaladoneron" (The Carol), Athens 1950, b) "I Sonitsa" (The Wedding), Athens 1967, c) "To psomin" (The Bread), Athens 1972. 2) Pantelis Melanofrydis "I en Ponto elliniki glossa" (The Greek language in Pontus), Vatoum 1910, reissued by Adelphon Kyriakidi, Thessaloniki 1987. 3) Savvas Ioannidis, "History and statistics of Trebizond", Constantinople 1870, reissued by Adelphon Kyriakidi, Thessaloniki 1988 and 4) Anthimos Papadopoulos "Istorikon Lexikon tis pontiakis dialektou" (Historical Dictionary of the Pontic dialect), of the Pontic Studies Committee, Appendix 3 (A-L Athens 1958, M-O Athens 1961).

The material that was collected and classified began to be published in the magazine "Pontiako Vima" of the Efxinos Leschi Kozanis, from issue 38 in 1994, in alphabetical order of the words related to the proverbs, expressions, etc., and in twenty-nine (29) consecutive issues, its publication was completed in 2003 with issue 74-75.
The published material of the proverbs, expressions, etc. in the 29 issues of the magazine "Pontiako Vima", which during the period of quarterly editions brought its subscribers in contact with this richness of our dialect, today, is scattered archival material, which is not easily accessible to those who wish to come into contact with it.
Therefore, I considered it my duty to publish this book, mainly for the sake of the young third and subsequent generations of Pontians, whose desire will be to enrich their knowledge and to savor, like salt and pepper, their language, the Pontic dialect they would like to speak or write.
