Description

The Areopagitic work in itself is a challenge for every researcher of Byzantine history, philosophy, theology, as well as medieval Western thought; even more so when it is connected to major phases in the development of ideas in the long history of Byzantine society and Western intellectualism. With its public appearance in the early 6th century, the author is immediately accepted as he introduces himself, and his work quickly gains great popularity and becomes involved, unintentionally, in early doctrinal struggles; it is used indiscriminately by Orthodox and Monophysites. The reason for the use, up to the point of abuse by the Monophysites, is mainly because the attributed and universally recognized authority and antiquity of Dionysius gave a serious advantage to the "invention" of the Alexandrian deacon Themistius, leader of the Ignorant, about "a theandric energy" of Christ, which is a distortion of the Areopagitic expression, found in the letter to Gaius the Therapeutae: "but when God became man, he assumed a new theandric energy for us"; thus, in this way, he restored the missing link of the Monophysites with the ancient tradition that they wanted to present as the Monophysitic view of the incarnate Son and Word of God, as the primordial faith of the Church. The Areopagitic works occupied them from their appearance, and since then they have held a special place in global thought and continuously nourish thought until our days; proof of this is the books that have been written and are being written. Finally, beyond the autonomous value of the Areopagitic work, a "scholastic" question remains pending for historians and theologians: to what extent should the Areopagitic body be classified as the last apologetic work, and at the same time without a name, but with an identity, as the last esoteric work of the ancient Church.
