This book analyzes and critically evaluates gender equality policy as a distinct public policy at the international, European, and national levels.
The first part of the study refers to the UN's policy on women, from feminist interventions during the formation of the League of Nations (1919) to gender equality in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The second part, regarding the European Union, begins with the Treaty of Rome (1957) and ends with the European Strategy for Gender Equality (2020-2025). The third part, focusing on Greece, starts from the Constitution of 1975 and extends to the abolition of the autonomy of the General Secretariat for Gender Equality in June 2019.
The study highlights the factors that promoted gender equality policies at these three levels of policy-making, as well as the obstacles and resistances faced by their development and implementation. Particularly emphasized are the political and economic circumstances, the priorities of policy-making institutions, women's and feminist demands, and the role of feminists in critical political and administrative positions within and outside institutions.
The evaluation is supported by primary archival material and the personal experiences of the author, who has held positions of responsibility for gender equality in Europe and Greece.
