To give and to receive is perhaps the most human thing, but also the closest to divine nature. This is what the Roman Stoic philosopher Seneca argues in his most extensive and analytical ethical treatise On Benefits (De Beneficiis). 

James Romm, translating the main points of the work excellently, conveys the essence of Seneca's position that generosity and gratitude are among the most important virtues. For Seneca, the impulse to give to others is the very foundation of society; without it, we are pitiable beings, worse than wild animals. But generosity did not arise by chance. Seneca sees it as part of our desire to resemble the gods, who, by creating the earth and the sky, gave us the greatest gift. 

Seneca's thought, filled with deep humanism, can be a valuable source of inspiration for a life with more solidarity and giving, as it reminds us that being generous is not only good, it is pleasant.
