Description

[...] This book contains three independent works that, although dealing with different subjects, form a unity because they are expressions of the main artistic trends of modern Greek ecclesiastical painting within a period of less than a century. The first refers to the iconographic work of D. Georgantas in the church of Agios Ioannis in Markopoulo Attica, an academic painter with studies in Athens, Munich, and Rome, who worked in the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, and painted according to the rules of Western naturalistic painting. The second studies a pilgrimage icon of Panagia Zoodochos Pigi from the 19th century, which is located in the newer church of Zoodochos Pigi in Paiania and is a characteristic example of a folk-style iconography of the time, practiced by non-academic painters alongside the "Nazarene" painting. The church of Zoodochos Pigi in Paiania will be illustrated in the 1940s by F. Kontoglou. The third work presents the iconographic work of F. Kontoglou in the church of Agios Georgios Kypseli. D. Pelekasis had previously worked in the same church. Thus, in Agios Georgios, we have the fortunate coincidence of enjoying the work of the two Modern Greek painters who were the first to believe in the need to return Orthodox iconography to its roots.
