Description

In modern Greece, the Constitution had, compared to other countries, few declared enemies. This, however, does not mean that it had only friends. From the notables of the first post-revolutionary decades, who used it to return to power through elections, to that great "School" of our politicians, who do not hesitate to violate it for narrow personal or party gain, our history is full of protagonists and extras who see the Constitution more as a necessary evil than as a set of binding rules. The list becomes even longer if one adds to the above those who see the Constitution as an alibi, "loading" it with "shiny" provisions that they know very well cannot be implemented in practice.

The remarkable thing is that usually the Constitution "takes revenge" on all these people, sooner or later. Because, as every active citizen knows, a text, once voted on and enacted as law, is like a child who is kicked out of the house when it grows up: it takes its own path.

This book is dedicated to this ambiguous function of the Constitution in modern Greece.
It is a fascinating aspect of our modern history, which the author examines in light of the constitutional development of the major European countries and the USA over the last two centuries. Especially for the period of the Metapolitefsi, the author tries to explain how we reached the brink of the abyss in 2010, although, as is at least universally acknowledged, parliamentary institutions functioned so "perfectly" in our country during this time.
