A game that will keep you busy for several hours. You will revisit areas of the map several times to unlock doors depending on the powers you will gradually acquire. You will definitely get stuck at times
Amazing game. One of the few from Nintendo that is worth the 50 euros. I place it on the same level as Zelda and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Incredibly atmospheric, nice story, very suspenseful. The game is perfect for those who love arcade games

I am a big fan of the Metroid series in general. I have played some old Metroid games and the Prime series. Metroid Dread is the pinnacle of Metroid games, returning to its roots. Very good gameplay, incredible graphics and animations specifically, excellent sound, and a good storyline. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because I consider it a bit overpriced, but if you are a fan of Metroid, don't hesitate! Buy it! (Also, my box came in Italian, so there's that)
Awesome..a lot of stress in the chase! I don't know if I'm suitable for evaluating Metroid since I have a love for Samus. It should not be missing from any collection.

9/10 game for the following reasons:
Graphics: 10/10, for switch standards. Exceptional models, animation, and background. Timeless art style. The atmosphere is also amazing, except for the EMMI zones after each EMMI's death. The game has the best graphics on the switch for me.
Music: 10/10, perfectly fits the game and helps create its atmosphere.
Story: 7/10, quite interesting with various plot twists that surprise you along the way. The concept of the EMMIs is the best part. The only personal drawback is the absence of Samus' voice acting.
Performance: 9/10, 60fps for the graphics it offers means excellent optimization work by the developers. However, there were consistent frame drops in 2-3 rooms. It would drop to 30-40fps, which you notice immediately, but it doesn't make the game unplayable.
Gameplay: 9/10, I saved the most important part for last. Exceptionally well-designed combat with flawless controls. At the beginning, as expected, you will feel like a complete noob, but the game's difficulty forces you to improve. There are no unfair deaths caused by factors beyond the player's control. If you die, it means it was due to your own inability. With several bosses, when I first encountered them, I thought there was no way I could defeat them. But with each try, I got closer and closer to winning the fight until I finally succeeded. Another advantage is the introduction of new abilities that enhance your combat skills, movement speed, and areas you can visit on the map. It should be noted that as the father of the metroidvania genre, Metroid competes with the exploration feel of Breath Of The Wild. You are always searching for the next door or hidden item that you can reach with your new ability. Backtracking is easy thanks to the amazing map. There are many types of enemies with different attack styles and health. Ultimately, the game never gets boring until you finish it. It always has a new challenge ready for you.

1) The game has a duration of 10-15 hours, depending on the player and the percentage of items collected.
2) The replayability is only for completing it with a better time, so it is limited.

You are always on alert! I got anxious at some points, got stuck. I went back to see what I did wrong, what I missed, what I haven't unlocked... I blame myself for that, of course, because it generally has a good flow, although I would like a little more exploration :)
However, I can't say that it particularly challenged me as a game. I played it for the first time, after finishing the masterpiece Hollow Knight and Ori. So I believe I was toughened up :P
Beautiful game, vibrant colors, nice music. The physical edition is worth its money, I believe. I would like to get the collector's edition with the steelbook at some point :')
I have learned to hold a small basket when I see a fuss about console exclusivities, and the reasons are obvious. The world has now become accustomed to mediocrity, and Metroid Dread is another proof of this phenomenon.
This particular game has nothing to say... Weak soundtrack, boring bosses that are dealt with in the same pattern, no exploration, and the game's selling point, which is the EMMIs, fails to give you the feeling of "dread" that I am still searching for. As for the mechanics, the fact that I have to press 4 buttons to shoot a rocket or that the double jump has a delay otherwise it doesn't register, are examples of B-grade studio game design.
If you have played games like Hollow Knight or Bloodstained, then you will understand how far behind Dread is in terms of design, music, and content. 3 stars for Samus' suit alone.
The last game in the series is good and keeps you alert. It has some annoying parts, especially when EMMI is chasing you and you have quicktime events that you fail 70% of the time. Besides that, the game is perfect and has a great atmosphere. It goes without saying that it is a must for Metroid fans.
After many years, I had the opportunity to play a classic 2D Metroid and I don't regret spending 50 euros!

Awesome game! Classic platformer. Losing, searching without someone holding your hand. The panic from being chased by EMMI increases the satisfaction when you defeat them.
I had read all the rave reviews before purchasing it and to make my position clear from the beginning (because I am going to be "bad"), I was, I am, and I will be a Metroid fanboy since the first title on the NES that was bought for me for Christmas in fourth grade around 1991.
But let's start with the positives.
1. Very well-crafted art design and the graphics and depiction of the world are truly beautiful. Of course, we are talking about a 2D/2.5D title, so the bar is not set too high.
2. What I loved the most were the Boss Fights, which stand out because, without being annoyingly difficult, they require the player to be observant and focused, a balance that is not easily found anymore outside of the well-known Souls games.
3. The story and narration and the whole setup, although slightly convoluted, provide explanations and keep you engaged, holding onto the entire Samus mythology.
4. The gameplay with gradual additions and the increase in abilities is wonderful (like in every Metroid!).
Before I start with the negatives, let me say that I hate those people who bury/criticize something that the world loves just to stand out from the crowd. I am not like that, and especially not with titles like Metroid. BUT...
Guys, you all talk about Metroidvania, etc. Honestly, did anyone get stuck in the game and had to backtrack to figure out how to progress? I think this might be THE MOST LINEAR METROID ever! The game practically "locks" you into a path, guiding the player to the right direction. For me, the magic of the game has always been exploration and searching. Unfortunately, that magic is completely lost.
Then we have the addition of the EMMI. After the second one, I literally got bored. Completely unnecessary addition for me, it ruined the entire atmosphere. Okay, I can understand that if there were no innovations, there would be people complaining about the lack of new elements, but this particular addition didn't click with me.
Thirdly, there was an amber alert for the music... From the 8-bit tunes on the Game Boy, the bar has always been set high... I don't even want to talk about Lower Norfair or the amazing music in the Prime games (oh, that amazing theme from Corruption...). Here, I finished the game and nothing has stayed with me. The music is absent for me.
I finished it in 15 hours and something, of course, completing 100% of the items. I can't say that I regretted the 50€, but I would be lying if I said I was impressed. If it was a standalone title, I would say okay, but how can you compare it to Super/Fusion/Zero as a Metroid fan? How??? As for the Prime games, I dare not even enter the comparison phase for obvious reasons. It simply takes a place alongside Other M for me. Played it, finished it, forgotten. I wonder how it can be a candidate for GOTY.
I know that many will disagree, but those old faithful fans of the series who play it should keep the above in mind...

Very nice game with beautiful art and graphics, whether docked or portable. The more you play, the more addicted you become to exploring the world!
I have reached close to 30 hours and I continue. It is the 3rd Metroid I am playing and I have to say only this. The game is extremely enjoyable. Along with Super Metroid, it is the best of its kind. It is not only very good in graphics, story, atmosphere, direction, and all the things we always look at. It is very complete and programmatically. Its frames are consistently high. The image does not cut off, not even in points where other AAA games have accustomed us to see it very often. The detail of the movement of all the graphics in a 2.5D world reaches perfection. The action is non-stop with small cutscenes, very rich in options and battle modes, and you will need all the buttons of the controller. I wish all productions were like this.
A must title for all metroidvania fans, but also worth trying for newcomers to the genre.
Awesome game, the sequel to Fusion that we all expected since the DS era and ended up on the Switch...! Anyone who likes exploration and Metroidvanias in general (duh), should definitely check this out
Very nice game, after all it is Metroid. It has many similarities with Super Metroid and makes it particularly high, making it a candidate for the best Metroid Game.
The first Metroid I play, I really like it, as well as the first Nintendo console I buy.
This objectively is the game of the year 2021!! The best thing I have played this year and in general in the last few years. It stands rightfully next to the great games of this generation, such as Zelda BOTW, Mario Odyssey, Luigi Mansion 3, and Astral Chain. The best 60 euros I have spent on gaming lately. Every gamer should get involved with Metroid Dread, which retains elements of the past and improves them masterfully! It is highly recommended as it will not disappoint you!
The only reason I don't give this masterpiece a 5 is because they could have done something better with the boss fight soundtracks. If you're a Metroid fan, it's a must-play. With so many mechanics, I didn't feel like the game was 2D!

Well, I'm a "fanatic" of metroidvania games and I have played quite a few, mainly on the Nintendo Switch, and I believe I have a good opinion to give now that I have completed Metroid Dread with 86% item completion in 12 hours.
(I completed it in 13 hours and 13 minutes with 100% item completion, unlocking all the images from the art gallery. After that, though, besides doing hard mode/speed run, the game doesn't have anything else to offer. There is no other mode and the hard mode just makes the enemies hit you harder).
Let's start with the positives -
Very good graphics, perhaps the best 2.5D graphics I have seen in a metroidvania game, even better than Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Ori and the Will of the Wisps.
The gameplay is fast-paced and quite action-heavy, especially when you acquire additional abilities/power-ups, giving you the feeling that you are playing a hack and slash game with the speed at which you explore the areas. It's the first time I've seen a parry mechanic being implemented in a metroidvania game, which you often have to use multiple times to progress through the story. Overall, if I compare it to older Metroid games, the main problem that existed was that if something got close to you, you had no way to keep them at a distance to attack them with your weapon. Here, that problem has been solved in a very good way. There is also the slide mechanic that allows you to pass through narrow passages without needing to crouch, or for those who know how to use the Morph Ball, resulting in being able to maintain the speed you have when running and creating incredible scenarios to avoid enemies and intense chases with the EMMI that hunt you down.
The map is huge and the overall game duration from start to finish, if you ignore collecting items and only focus on the story, I would say it will take you around 6-9 hours the first time you play it without any help. Otherwise, if you go for 100% completion, I would say it will take around 12-15 hours.
There are cutscenes/cinematics that you rarely see in metroidvania games.
The elite/boss fights, for the most part, are good. The elite fights, not so much because they used many of the same enemies without making any changes to the way you face them. On the other hand, the boss fights, most of them are good, some I would even say are unique because you need to use the parry and slide mechanics.
The EMMI, perhaps in my opinion, the best part of the game and the only feature in a metroidvania game that you won't see elsewhere. The EMMI are robotic enemies that guard specific areas on the map and you have to pass through them. They cannot be defeated until you find a special power, so you have to either pass by unnoticed or if they spot you, you have to run for your life to a safe place. There are a total of 7 EMMI and each one becomes even more difficult. If they catch you, you have a chance to escape with the Parry, but it's quite difficult to time it right. However, if you manage to do it, personally, it was very satisfying for me. Overall, the whole experience reminds me a bit of Metal Gear Solid 2.
The UI (menu, map, character statistics) is very good and clean, especially the map, which is incredibly detailed, perhaps the best map in a metroidvania game.
The loading times between rooms are faster than even Hollow Knight, which I thought no game could surpass. Not only that, but it's also more realistic. If you leave one room and immediately go back, the enemies you killed previously won't be there. Additionally, it remembers what you did in the previous room. For example, if you used an ability with a duration or range and then changed rooms, it will continue to work. This is the first time I've encountered this feature. Even the enemy attacks can change rooms if the gate you passed through was open.
Saving is quite fast, and the FPS is stable without any lag, both in docked and handheld mode.
The game plays amazingly with the camera capturing specific moments and areas you pass through. The power-ups are quite good, and you always feel that they are worth it when you acquire them. For those who have played previous games in the series, most of them are the same except for four new abilities.
With the 2019 edition of the Switch, the game lasted about 4-5 hours with medium brightness and sound, which is quite good considering the graphics it has.
Let me also mention the negatives -
One negative, and I will mention it, is the price. Yes, paying 50-60 euros for this game's duration is a bit tragic when big companies as well as indie developers have flooded the market with metroidvania games at much lower prices while being almost equal in quality to Metroid Dread. Maybe I will change my opinion if they add something extra in the form of free DLC, like Hollow Knight and Bloodstained have been doing for a while.
Related to the price, when a customer pays such a large amount, you would expect the game to have everything included, including other languages. But it's only available in English, and I'm not even mentioning the voice overs because those can't be done in another language since they speak something that doesn't exist, so you read the subtitles. But the subtitles are only in English. Personally, it doesn't bother me, and probably not many Greeks either because we rarely have Greek subtitles in games, and we have gotten used to it. But I mention it as laziness on Nintendo's part for not offering the simplest thing at these exorbitant prices.
There will be moments when you simply won't know where to go because many breakable walls don't have any indication that they can be broken. This will mainly be a problem at the beginning when you don't have the ability to scan the area or because you don't have rockets to spend, and you'll be thinking about where and when to use them. It happened to me, and it took me 20-25 minutes for something very silly. I watched a one-minute video to help me, and it had 150,000 views, so I wonder if I wasn't the only one who encountered the problem.
Unfortunately, you can't play with the D-Pad/Arrow keys. I always play metroidvania games with them, and this time I couldn't. The worst part is that you walk and aim with the same analog stick, making battles more difficult than they should be. However, I understand their decision because 95% of the buttons are already used for other things.
Music, I expected something better and more songs. In Metroid Fusion that came out on Gameboy Advance, I felt that there were better tracks. Metroid Dread also has some very good ones, but they didn't stick in my mind like in other games.
As for backtracking, at first it will frustrate you, but once you finish it and find all the teleporters and use them at least once, then and only then it unlocks the option to choose where to teleport instead of only being able to teleport to specific points that correspond to their color. But still, I would have preferred to have this option from the beginning, as is usual in most metroidvania games that have been released in this decade. (minor flaw)
Conclusion, if you want to start with metroidvania games and you care about every penny in your pocket, I would say don't get it. It's just too expensive. With the same amount of money, you can get 2 or maybe even 3 very good metroidvania games when they're on sale, like Hollow Knight, Bloodstained, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, SteamWorld Dig 2... and the list goes on.
But if you're a fan, I believe it's a fantastic choice, especially if you're like me and have played most of the good metroidvania games.
I will change my rating to 5 stars if additional free DLC is added to provide more gameplay, like a boss rush mode or additional unlocked areas.
Update: I finished it 3 times, once in hard mode and twice in normal mode. I did one "speed run" for the gallery (4 hours). The positive thing about this whole experience is that even after 3 times, I would play it again. The "sequence breaks" it has allow you to explore the areas in different orders in many ways, making the whole game feel more open world, similar to Super Metroid. Besides that, because the character is fast, you don't feel like you're dragging at the beginning of the game and you quickly surpass the boring parts to reach the power-ups.
On the negative side, I would say the boss fights are simply too easy, except for two exceptions, and this is when playing in hard mode. The other problem I encountered, after creating the third save file, is that the loading screens became longer, the transitions between certain rooms became slower, and I experienced occasional stutters. I don't know exactly what's happening, but the game seems to struggle more with 3 save files.
The king of metroidvania has returned! Fantastic visuals and sound that I wonder how they did it and it looks so great on the Switch. Smooth gameplay and perfect handling of Samus that makes the gameplay truly satisfying!
I have no contact with the Metroid series. Nevertheless, the game managed to touch me for good. Unreal art and level design, addictive gameplay, and most importantly non-stop action! The bosses are also the icing on the cake. I love it endlessly!

Its controls are perhaps the best I have encountered. Its design and mechanics make it unique. It's not just another metroidvania that someone can say. The game is unique and in a category of its own.
Even its graphics are incredible for a 2D scrolling game, along with the sound effects, they create a fantastic atmosphere!!!
