Description

A comprehensive and user-friendly guide that covers the history of Christianity from its inception to the present day across all continents. Written in a simple manner, it includes timelines and a multitude of photographs that make reading enjoyable. A necessary reference book in every library.

The book does not require any prior knowledge of Christian history or theology. There is a glossary to assist those who are not familiar with certain technical terms, and there is also a bibliography with chapter-by-chapter suggestions for further study.

The history of Christianity is such a vast subject that no book can hope to adequately handle its complexity and breadth. This particular book aims to provide a quick overview of the key aspects of the topic. It is divided into seventeen chapters, each of which describes a different period of Christian history. The first ten chapters (and the sections within each chapter) are structured chronologically, forming a cohesive narrative from the time of Jesus to the contemporary period. The last four chapters collectively describe the history of the Church in the past hundred or so years, with each one focusing on a specific region of the world.

It is not just a narrative about how Christianity changed the world, but also about how the world changed Christianity. In the pages of this book, we will encounter persecuted pacifists, sword-wielding monks, European Enlightenment philosophers, nomads of the Mongolian steppes, and many others. Christianity has spread to almost all cultures on earth, and all peoples have understood or reinterpreted the Christian message in their own way. Therefore, the purpose of the book is not only to narrate what Christians have done, but also how Christianity itself has adapted to different peoples and cultures - and this to the extent that Christians seek to remain faithful to the message of Jesus, no matter how differently they have understood it.
