In this volume, positions are depicted and pressing issues are highlighted, such as green development and environmental planning, the future of political parties and our political system, ideological and reformist quests for the role of the state in the modern international and domestic environment, the left and the social democracy of our time.

The author shows particular interest in the issues of reform and the re-foundation of local self-government, which he also serves as an elected Prefect of Magnesia, pointing out the obstacles posed to further upgrading of the institution by specific constitutional choices and interpretive approaches, but also proposing specific measures of constitutional policy for self-government, in order to remove this obstacle in the convergence process of Greek local self-government with other European countries.

The reformist thinking on self-government, and especially the "Kallikratis" plan, offer the author the opportunity to develop his views on the reorganization of self-government, the functional articulation of public administration and public policies, and the participatory revitalization of local democracy. Social accountability and substantive transparency, administrative efficiency and resource efficiency are basic requirements of a reform process, which can only be completed under the condition that it is continuous, comprehensive and multifaceted.
