In recent years, there has been an effort in our country to give a new breath and value to the study of our ancient classical texts. Alongside the formalistic research of philological sources and their grammatical/syntactic analysis, a realistic approach to the classical civilization itself is attempted, as it emerges from the ancient texts. The purpose of such an approach is not, of course, the revival of a glorious past through the imitation of its creations, but the extraction of creative inspiration for the construction of a modern education, through the understanding and deepening of its basic timeless values and methodology.

Such an effort is also made by Nestor Kurakis' book. In it, an attempt is made, first and foremost, to give the essence of our classical heritage - to present, in an understandable but also documented way, the basic components that govern the methodology and ideals of ancient Greek civilization in the fields of Ethics, Politics, Science, and Art. At a second, parallel level, however, the correlation of these ideals with today's Greek reality is also attempted, in order to highlight those elements that still maintain the freshness of the "classical" and that could still be useful to us today, after 2,500 years, in improving ourselves and, therefore, in better achieving our goals.
