The four texts presented here introduce the thinker as a reader of other creators. They are landmarks of the period 1932-1947, after which the mature Sartre will turn more intensely and militantly towards social reflection and his diverse, sometimes controversial, political action. In the text on Husserl's "Intentionality," he constructs his own version of phenomenology, outlining the inseparable bond between consciousness and the world. In the two essays on William Faulkner's novels "Sartoris" and "The Sound and the Fury," he focuses on the conscious flow of the former and the experiential, metaphysical dimensions of the latter's temporality. With "Cartesian Freedom," he concludes a speculative cycle around human consciousness, raising the question of compatibility between the freedom of thought and the objectivity of truth. And in all four texts, the philosopher expresses his opposition to what we would call the "culture of interiority." For Sartre, the only concrete thing is each individual within the situations they experience.
