Description

The book is the result of a study of photocopies of the folders of the Student Association and the Heidelberg Community, as well as the author's personal archive, who was a member of both organizations. Thus, a historical journey is outlined, embellished with personal experience, of two important associations of Greeks abroad. These organizations operated based on the principle of autonomy of the mass space, a principle known to Greeks in Germany as "the Heidelberg model".

The organizations examined in this work had purposes from the beginning that did not involve the concept of politics. However, over time, the opinion prevailed among the members that the above organizations had, in practice, a political character. The research identifies the different ways in which their members chose to shape their political decisions through internal processes.

Given that real political action is an experience of people, the content of the experience for action is formed by their participation in the internal processes of the organization. An example wants the internal processes to be based on the free participation of the members, who will decide through democratic procedures and with autonomy against the coercion of the Authorities. In the same example, the basic values that will determine the content of political action are mentioned: the value of resistance against the violation of human rights, as well as the value of enhancing the dignity of its members.

The research on the Greek Associations in Heidelberg is also relevant, as even today efforts are being made to find the most beneficial ways to create collectivities of social action with democracy and freedom. Thus, the presentation of information on how the democratic functioning and autonomy of both the Association and the Community were put into practice may highlight an example of free democratic formation and autonomous operation of a social union. The act of joint action by students and workers also acquires great importance, perhaps a unique example of collective participation with the aim of social liberation.
