Description

A book cannot say it all, especially when it is an introductory study, with an essayistic character, dealing with the history of a state over the course of a century. It should primarily highlight the major patterns and describe the dominant trends as well as the major contradictions through which the process of modernization and regressions evolved, as is the case with every historical trajectory of a state in the period of European modernity. Primarily, it should test interpretations and reconsider the big questions of modern Greek history, covering the period from 1909, the year when with the movement in Goudi and the chain reactions it causes in the political and social field, the country enters a completely new historical phase; until 2001 when it abandons its national currency to adopt the common European one from the beginning of 2002, but also starts an era of denial of the political system and society for adaptation to the new, harsh, but also full of opportunities reality of globalization. The questions that arise come from both the various needs of modern historiographical research and from the current conjuncture itself, from its own priorities and upheavals. In any case, it is rather hypocritical to claim that we ignore our era and that we are not its children. It is at least more intellectually honest, after listening to its anxieties and respecting its sensitivities, to pose its questions in the crucible of our science.
