Description

In the early 1990s, in the aftermath of the "victory over communism" symbolized by the fall of the Berlin Wall, at a time when some believed that the end of history had arrived, a different story begins to unfold underground.

This story is initially characterized by the so-called "deregulation," which was supposed to give the term "globalization" an increasingly derogatory meaning; at the same time, it marked the explosive increase in global inequalities; finally, at the same time, a systematic effort to deny climate change begins.

In this essay, Bruno Latour suggests interpreting these three phenomena as symptoms of the same historical condition: events occur as if a large part of the ruling class had long concluded that the earthly space is no longer sufficient to accommodate both them and the rest of its inhabitants.

Consequently, they decided that it was useless to pretend that history was still moving towards a common horizon where "all people" could have equal access to prosperity. Alienated from the absence of a common world to share, we are now experiencing the consequences of this decision, one of the symbols of which is, among others, Donald Trump.

If we continue to overlook the fact that we have entered a New Climate Regime, we will not be able to understand either the explosion of inequalities, or the extent of deregulation, or the criticism of globalization, or, above all, the panicked return to the protectionism of the nation-state - what we mistakenly call "the rise of populism."

In order to resist this lack of common orientation, we need to ground ourselves somewhere. Therefore, it is important to find a way to orient ourselves. And to design something like a map of the positions imposed on us by the new landscape, as it redefines not only the emotions of public life, but also its stakes.

  • Very good choice with "special language" here. I highly recommend it, especially for fans of the Chomsky-Klein work.
