Description

"The Revolution of 1821" by Dimitris Fotiadis is a grand work of our national self-awareness. A milestone in modern Greek historiography, it overturns myths and faithfully serves historical truth. It illuminates the journey of the nation from the deep darkness of slavery to the dawn of national rebirth. Starting from the siege of Constantinople, it covers three hundred and seventy-eight years and reaches the independence of Greece. The author, weighing his material with the uncompromising gaze of the historian and at the same time approaching it with the passion of a person for whom this history is not dead letter, has as his declared goal the synthesis. Through the vivid depiction of historical moments, the precise but also creative reconstruction of the atmosphere of the era, the rich illustration, the utilization of the testimony of eyewitnesses, and the use of skillful language, he delivers to the modern reader a literally captivating reading and to the researcher-analyst a perpetual asset.

The third volume covers the period from mid-1824 to autumn 1827. It is a period of anxiety with a resurgence of civil strife on the mainland and Ibrahim intervening in the Morea. Among the most tragic events was the destruction of Mesolongi, which caused a pan-European sensation. On the other hand, significant victories are achieved at sea, and finally, the change in the international political scene and the decisive naval battle of Navarino play a catalytic role.
