Description

"Introduction to Medical Mycology" is a useful textbook for familiarizing oneself with Medical Mycology. It briefly presents the main elements of laboratory diagnosis and monitoring of fungal infections, while also approaching some of the most important related clinical conditions in a grouped manner.

Its chapters include the thematic units of laboratory diagnosis of deep and superficial fungal infections, harmonization of sensitivity limits and monitoring of therapeutic levels of antifungal drugs, candidiasis infections in pediatric patients, fungal infections in immunocompromised patients and patients in intensive care units, as well as fungal infections of the skin and its appendages. At the end, there are characteristic schematic representations of important pathogenic fungi, along with descriptive elements of their morphology. For easier understanding of these descriptions, as well as for the interpretation of terms encountered in international literature, a comprehensive English-Greek glossary of useful mycological terms is included.

The coordination and editing of the book was undertaken by Timoleon-Achilleas Vyzantiadis, Associate Professor of Medical Pathology-Microbiology at the 1st Microbiology Laboratory of the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The authors include doctors, members of the teaching staff of the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National Health System, who, due to their position and specialization, are systematically involved in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of fungal infections.
