Description

The present four-volume Byzantine work, widely known as Euergetinos, is considered the most complete collection of sayings, exhortations, and teachings of the Holy Fathers of the Desert. The full title of this work is "Collection of the God-inspired Sayings and Teachings of the Holy and God-bearing Fathers gathered from all the divinely inspired Scriptures" and dates back to the 11th century. The author of the book was the monk Paul, the founder of the Holy Monastery of the Most Holy Theotokos Euergetis near Constantinople, and this work has been one of the most beloved readings for both monks and laypeople throughout the centuries.

In this edition, the original text is followed by a modern Greek translation. The main goal of the author is to equip every Christian with a complete spiritual guide for combating various sins. The work is divided into four books, which include two hundred "cases". Each case deals with the method of combating a passion and acquiring the corresponding virtue. The cases include direct opinions, thoughts, teachings, examples, and narratives of the great Fathers of Asceticism, such as Anthony the Great, Pachomius, Euthymius, Theodosius the Coenobiarch, Mark the Ascetic, as well as other holy abbots of the great ascetic centers of Thebaid, Nitria, Tabenna, and the wider Middle Eastern region.
