Description

The art of rhetoric must have been one of the subjects with which the philosopher Stagiritis began his teaching at Plato's Academy, but it was a subject of teaching for many years. Books, of course, on this subject Aristotle had written and for the general public outside the Academy, but these works - like all his other works in this category - have not been preserved. However, fate has been favorable to us in relation to his main teaching manual for the art of rhetoric. This manual (titled Rhetoric) was handed down to us divided into three books, but the third book - unlike the first two - does not deal specifically with topics of rhetorical art, but with the broader topic of prose style. Aristotle's Rhetoric (books A-B) contains an extremely interesting rhetoric teaching, the value of which has been recognized in various ways in recent years, making it a solid foundation for the practice of this art. The division of rhetorical speeches into three types (deliberative, forensic, and epideictic speeches) and the thorough presentation of each of them have always been considered one of the greatest contributions to the art of rhetoric.

The first of the two volumes with which "Zitros Publications" began presenting this Aristotelian work in 2002 included the first book (ancient text and translation). It also included an extensive introduction to the art of rhetoric in ancient Greece in general, as well as specifically to Aristotle's specific rhetorical manual, while a multitude of interpretive and other comments were intended to make the understanding of this difficult Aristotelian text easier.

In the second (last) volume (books B and C), the reader has the opportunity to read - among other things - Aristotle's extremely interesting teachings on passions and character (always related to the work of the orator), as well as his equally interesting observations on style and the arrangement of the parts of a rhetorical speech. The eloquent translation and informative comments once again help the reader understand what Aristotle brought to the teaching of this truly great art.

The entire editing of the publication belongs to the honorary professor of the School of Philosophy at the University of Thessaloniki, Mr. Dim. Lypourlis. Many of his students will surely remember that Aristotle's Rhetoric was one of his favorite teaching subjects. Perhaps this is ultimately why the presentation of this Aristotelian work by the well-known philologist is done in a completely understandable manner.
