The Gospel According to John was characterized by Saint Irenaeus (3rd century) as "spiritual" because it particularly emphasizes the presence and action of the Holy Spirit. Until today, the main reading of excerpts from this gospel begins on Easter Sunday and ends on Pentecost Sunday, a period during which we are called to experience the final times of the divine Kingdom that were revealed as present through the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ, as well as through the mission of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, it is a mystical gospel. The approach to the text of the Gospel According to John has a specific goal: to serve as a continuous catechetical lesson for adults through Johannine theology. Moreover, the gospel itself serves as a mystical catechesis for baptized believers who have been sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit at their baptism.
