Description

The African War / De bello Africo is the second in chronological order of the minor wars conducted by Julius Caesar after his triumphant victory against Gnaeus Pompeius at Pharsalus. It chronologically follows the events presented in the Alexandrian War and precedes those recorded in the Spanish War.
As a military event, it is undoubtedly a huge success for Julius Caesar and a clear proof of his leadership skills. Caesar landed on the shores of Africa facing a long series of difficulties: unfavorable weather conditions during the landing period, the lack of military experience of the newly recruited legions he had with him, the fragmentation of his military forces due to the storm that had struck his fleet, the numerical superiority and superior military experience of his opponents' legions, and the presence of Titus Labienus among the enemy ranks as a counterbalance to his own strategic intelligence. Faced with all these adversities, Caesar demonstrated in this campaign all the gifts that had made him a military and political genius, and achieved one of the most triumphant victories of his illustrious career. These very events are clearly and comprehensively attributed in the chapters of the work De Bello Africo.

The Historical Quest editions complete with this work the three-volume series "Caesar's Wars," which introduces the Greek audience to the historical texts concerning Caesar's military adventures and traces his path towards the conquest of supreme power in Rome and, ultimately, his untimely death under the blows of the conspirators on the Ides of March in 44 BC. This series also includes the "Alexandrian War" / De bello Alexandrino and the "War in Spain" / De bello Hispaniensi. It is worth noting that these works are translated for the first time into modern Greek, a task successfully accomplished by the philologist Christos Anagnostou.
