Description

A virgin-mother who captivates for a century: "Aunt Tula" is one of the most popular novels by one of the greatest Spanish writers, Miguel de Unamuno, one of the "100 best books written in Spanish," as emphasized by El Mundo.

Hertrudis, a woman who awakens "the craving for pleasure," rejects marriage proposals and chooses to ignore love and her body in order to raise her sister's children. She lives with her godson, but does not want to marry him so as not to spoil the space where her "children" live; she detests "manliness," but there are moments when she "feels storms inside her"; she is puritanical, but denies that a woman's sole purpose is marriage; she has no romantic relationships, but becomes a mother; she is governed by her faith in purity and immortality, but recognizes the "stimulating sea breeze." A woman, paradoxical, complex, through whom Unamuno finds the opportunity to speak about women, eroticism, the institution of family, motherhood, sibling love, religion, and the concept of "sacrifice."

A novel with fast-paced action that remains timeless, as the translator Konstantinos Paleologos writes, "our characters are essentially presented without the surrounding material world: they only possess their emotions, their passions, their hatreds, and their sympathies," in other words, characteristics that are timeless.

The translation of the novel is based on the most authoritative version, that of Catedra editions. The book also includes the prologue by Miguel de Unamuno and an extensive afterword with a wealth of information about the work and the author.
