Description

Most of us do not doubt that democracy is the best of the existing political systems. Paradoxically, however, serious disagreements prevail among us as to the justification of this crisis. The disagreements also affect the issue of variation of the democratic regime that each of us supports. Where do these divergences come from? And how can we find a myth that will help us overcome, as much as possible, the labyrinth of conflicting opinions?

These questions constitute the common axis of the studies of political philosophy contained in this volume. From these studies, some directly and some indirectly, within the framework of the critical presentation of the work of prominent theorists of the past and present, express the position that democracy is a complex regime, which incorporates a plethora of moral and political principles, the relationship between which is not without disputes and doubts: freedom and equality, adherence to formal procedures and expectation of correct decisions, protection of individual rights and orientation towards a synthetic formation of the common good, secrecy of the vote and publicity of dialogue, participation and representation, collectively shape our democracy. The author disagrees with those who argue that the relationship between these principles should be hierarchical and that therefore the one that dominates the others should be chosen, supporting that their synthesis is imperative. Thus, each of these principles must be interpreted in relation to the others, one by one, that is, in a way that minimizes their tensions.
