Description

Ioannis Zizoulas is widely recognized as the most important Orthodox theologian of the second half of the previous century and a respected advocate of Ecumenism. Based on a deep knowledge of the spiritual sources of the Church, Zizoulas has argued that the Fathers of the Church express a profound understanding of freedom and community, which represents a radical challenge to modern conceptions of the individual. Zizoulas uses the work of the Fathers to make a significant distinction between the person, defined by community, and the isolated individual who sees community as a threat to their freedom. Zizoulas argues that God is the creative principle of freedom and community, and that the Christian Church is the space in which personhood and freedom emerge in existence.

This volume offers a critical assessment of the theology of Ioannis Zizoulas. Prominent Anglican, Reformed, Catholic, and Orthodox international scholars, including Colin Gunton, Fr. Nikolaos Loudovikos, Paul McPartlan, Wolfhart Pannenberg, and Philip Rosato, present essays analyzing Zizoulas' trinitarian theology and his theological approach to the Church as the space where freedom and communion become a reality. Many of these essays engage with Zizoulas' work "Being as Communion" as well as other lesser-known works, now available in the volume "Communion and Otherness". The texts in this volume as a whole provide an unparalleled introduction to the work of this great theologian.
