Computer Speaker Buying Guide

Computer Speaker Buying Guide

Looking for new speakers for your PC?

Let's see their main features and which ones you should prioritize, based on the use you want to make.

1. Power (Watt)

The number of watts shows you the maximum power that the speaker can handle. However, keep in mind that it is not an indication of the maximum volume and sound quality that a speaker can have, as this depends on many factors, such as its construction. They simply show how easily a speaker can operate at higher volumes.

2. Sound sensitivity

The sensitivity of a speaker shows how effectively it converts power (watts) into volume (dB). The higher the value, the louder your speakers will play with a given power. A speaker with 3 dB higher sensitivity, compared to another speaker, only needs half the power for the same sound intensity.

3. Channels

Channels refer to the number and type of individual speakers included in the device and are described by 2 numbers separated by a dot.

The first number refers to how many full-range speakers (speakers for the entire frequency range) the device contains, while the second number refers to how many subwoofer speakers (speakers specialized for low frequencies) For example, a speaker with 2.1 sound channels has 2 regular speakers and 1 subwoofer.

Almost all music tracks are stereo (for playback from at least 2 speakers), meaning they are designed to sound different in each of the 2 channels to give the listener a sense of space. More speakers make this feeling even more realistic and the presence of a subwoofer gives a fuller bass sound.

2.0: Set of 2 speakers for stereo sound with limited bass. They do not have a subwoofer.

2.1: Set of 2 speakers that includes 1 subwoofer for deeper bass. Usually takes up more space.

5.1: Set of 5 speakers that includes 1 subwoofer. Suitable for movies or electronic games.
